Our walks today combined two of the shorter walks around Brecon.
In the morning, we set out in weak sunshine from Nythfa House to walk around Swlch Tump Fort to the north-east of Brecon, and then down to the Monmouth and Brecon Canal basin, where we had a welcome cup of coffee.
As we started a short walk along the first half-mile of canal towpath a rain shower hit us, and this continued in brief showers throughut the rest of the day. The towpath led past the local Rugby club, where a footpath allowed us to walk down to the River Usk. We went back into the town centre along the river bank path, avoiding the 'Explosive Invading Weed' that was scattered amongst the bordering undergrowth, and then up the hill to the Cathedral, where we had our packed lunches.
After a short visit inside the Cathedral and shop, some of the party decided to return to the canal for a boat trip, and the rest of us tackled the walk up to Pen-y-Crug, a 331m hill to the north-west of town. There, the full force of the wind and rain hit us, but that didn't hinder us getting the obligatory photographs of the group and the local views.
A gentle walk back down the hill and through the woods to our hotel completed our day.
